Transport Interchange, Manchester

As part of a wider investment program in improved transportation infrastructure across Manchester, a new £48million transport interchange was specified to facilitate improved integration of the existing railway station and bus station. The large roof area of the new concourse space created the perfect opportunity for rainwater to be captured and reused as a sustainable water supply.

Stormsaver was on hand to offer the best solution to achieve optimum water savings. Our project team used local rainfall data and demand calculations to determine that our Combi Rainwater Harvesting System would be best placed to provide a water supply to the customer toilets on the concourse. Maintenance was also a key consideration in the design of the system as the outdoor entrance plaza could not be closed during maintenance works; therefore, a 21,000 litre above ground storage tank was supplied to eliminate the issue of maintenance access.

Stormsaver was also entrusted with the ongoing maintenance of the site, and several interchange hubs in the area to help achieve maximum water savings and prolong the system’s lifespan. On our latest maintenance visit to the site, we found that the Combi unit had recycled 1.5 million litres of rainwater. This is the equivalent of 429,000 toilet flushes within the building.
