a rainwater harvesting control panel with integrated backwash filter

Automatic Backwash Filters

Our Automatic Backwash Filter improves the quality of the rainwater supply and protects components from small debris. Our innovative filter reduces maintenance requirements by utilising self-cleaning which operates when excess debris is detected.

This unique approach to rainwater harvesting filters rainwater to 35 microns. More common approaches to filtration rely on single-use cartridge filters which require manual replacement or solely depend on unreliable timed backwashes.

Monitoring Units

Looking to impress your client? Many building occupants love to showcase their environmental credentials. Rainwater harvesting systems are typically in inaccessible plant rooms, often going unnoticed by visitors who unknowingly benefit.

Now, building users can feel good that they are knowingly making a difference every time they flush with rainwater! With the Stormsaver Monitoring Display, water savings can be demonstrated for all to see. The display can  be fully tailored to your branding requirements.

uv disinfection on a rainwater harvesting system

Ultraviolet (UV) filtration

Bacteria and microorganisms, such as legionella, can develop in bodies of water, rainwater included. UV disinfection passes rainwater over UV light to provide a chemical-free, rapid treatment solution.

As per British Standard recommendations, UV disinfection is crucial where rainwater is reused in fine vapour form, in medical settings, or if you would like to elevate your project with best-practice filtration approaches.

We can also provide self-circulating UV disinfection for larger header tanks.

Further Information

Why opt for Stormsaver installation…

  • Choosing Stormsaver to provide installation services not only benefits contracting teams unfamiliar with the technology but also saves time for contractors who frequently install systems. It is one less complexity for you to consider.
  • As part of our specialist service, our experienced rainwater harvesting engineers will...
  • Connect the rainwater harvesting system to incoming mechanical and electrical services within the plant room, excluding running services into the plant room.
  • Install the rainwater pipework and associated submersible pumps within the main storage tank, excluding pipework from the main storage tank to the internal plant room.
  • Install any above-ground header tanks and sectional main storage tanks, excluding any below-ground storage tanks which are usually installed by the civils contractor during early ground works.
  • Install any UV filtration and third-stage filtration within proximity of the control panel.

Why include third-stage filtration…

  • Incorporating additional third-stage filtration in a rainwater harvesting system is considered a best practice. Although not mandatory as per the British Standard, our experiences over the past 20 years found that including this additional filtration stage can...
  • Protect components from becoming blocked with commissioning debris.
  • Prevent shadowing within further UV filtration.
  • Increase the cleanliness of the rainwater supply.
  • Improve the reliability of the rainwater supply by reducing the risk of failure from small debris.
  • What is included with Automatic Backwash Filtration…
  • An additional third stage of filtration.
  • A filter that communicates directly with associated water meters and control panel for monitoring purposes.
  • A self-cleaning filter tested to 1 million backwashes.
  • A filter unit that is integrated into a PLC electrical control system where individual terminals can be replaced, unlike alternatives.
  • An integrated filter and control unit which is designed and manufactured by us here in the UK facilitating improved lead times on replacement parts for end users.
  • Can be supplied with many system types, including commercial, communal, and retrofit rainwater harvesting systems.
  • A filter that can deliver 1-3 litres of rainwater every second to points of use. Talk to us about your requirements.

How it works

For achieving the best filtration results, the additional Automatic Backwash Filter is located between the main storage tank and header tank (or pressure vessel).

The Automatic Backwash Filter is controlled directly via the rainwater harvesting control panel. When a reduced flow of rainwater is detected by the control panel, the automatic backwash process will commence.

In normal operation mode, a supply of rainwater will be pushed through the metal coils of the filter to trap fine debris on the surface of the metal coil.

When a backwash is triggered by the control panel, a supply of rainwater is pushed in the reverse direction to dislodge any debris and send it straight to the drain. The automatic backwash process takes approximately 5-10 seconds.

As per British Standard requirements, you should include UV disinfection where…

  • The rainwater produces a fine vapour or aerosol.
  • Dust suppression activities, vehicle wash down, spray irrigation, and cooling.
  • Any application where there is potential for rainwater vapour to be inhaled.
  • While not mandatory, it is considered best practice to include UV disinfection in the following projects…
  • Care homes, medical facilities, hospitals, schools, education buildings.
  • Many reputable specifiers will suggest including UV filtration on all projects where rainwater harvesting is installed.

Considerations

  • UV treatment should be used in conjunction with additional third-stage filtration on the rainwater harvesting system to prevent shadowing from small particles. Learn more about this technology here.
  • UV treatment units should receive annual bulb replacements. This service is included in our maintenance solutions. Learn more about maintenance here.

Why showcase your water saving successes…

  • Water scarcity is increasing throughout key areas of the UK and your business has a responsibility to use water wisely.
  • Live water saving data can be a powerful tool educational tool to inspire the next generation of water conservationists within schools, universities, and other public buildings.
  • Gain easier access to real-time data which can assist with environmental, social, and governance reporting.
  • Ensure your rainwater harvesting system is operational and continuing to make a difference by saving water.

What’s included…

  • Plug and play digital display screen.
  • Live readings of rainwater usage within the building.
  • A wall bracket for mounting.
  • Larger screens are available on request.
