Train Maintenance Depot, Gloucester
Having set an ambitious target to reduce their potable water consumption by 2050 as part of their ESG goals (environmental, social, and governance), the client wanted a solution to improve water efficiency through rainwater harvesting in their latest location. The depot, located in Gloucester, aimed to achieve BREEAM outstanding and was constructed to maintain trains on the Great Western Mainline as part of the UK’s intercity express program.
Stormsaver was on hand to provide a bespoke solution for their requirements. The site was ideal for rainwater harvesting due to having a large roof area where train maintenance was carried out. Our estimating team proposed our popular combi rainwater harvesting system with a 10,000-litre capacity below-ground storage tank. The system was designed to provide a sustainable water supply from recycled rainwater collected from the roof area to serve a total of 14 toilets.
Since commissioning, Stormsaver has provided bi-annual maintenance services to the site enabling excellent reliability and high water savings. On our latest service visit, our engineer found that the system had recycled 1.8 million litres of rainwater. This is the equivalent of 444,000 toilet flushes for the facility. Our engineers have been able to demonstrate their skills in a safety-critical environment which requires additional track-side training.
