Blackpool Zoo

Having set ambitious sustainability goals to maximise recycling and minimise waste across their site, Blackpool Zoo wanted to make the latest addition to their facilities as sustainable as possible. The new £2.5 million elephant house was designed to be the largest elephant sanctuary in the country when opened in 2018.

Stormsaver was specified by the mechanical and electrical contractor to supply a rainwater harvesting system that could collect rainfall from the roof area to reduce surface water runoff and mains water demand from the site.  The collected rainfall could provide a secondary sustainable water supply for elephant washdown, topping up the external pool, and cooling the sand down for elephants.

We were able to supply our duplex control panel with an integrated automatic backwash filter to ensure a high-quality sustainable water supply for the facility. The system can deliver 2 litres of recycled rainwater every second. Our estimating team also specified our UV filter to ensure safety where the water is used in fine vapour form.

On our latest maintenance visit, our engineer found that the system had recycled over 2 million litres of rainwater for the facility. Without a rainwater harvesting system, the zoo would have been solely reliant on high-quality mains water for their total demand.
